What do I do if my game keeps crashing?

To help players experiencing game crashes, we’ve compiled a list of troubleshooting steps to help pinpoint any issues you might be experiencing.

Known Issues

Check to see if what you're experiencing is related to any Known Issues. This list is updated regularly and may include a workaround for the issue you are experiencing.

Adjust game settings

Although your PC may meet the minimum requirements for playing, some settings take more resources from your computer and can result in the game not working properly.

You can access the game’s settings through the Main Menu, on the Belfry, on the map, or while in a mission. Please note: opening the Settings Menu while in a mission does not pause gameplay.

Some recommended adjustments are below:
Graphics Quality: This can be found under Settings > Video > Graphics Quality. If you are set to “High” you can try “Medium” or “Low”
Max Frames Per Second: This can be found under Settings > Video > Max FPS. If you’re at Unlimited, you can try 60 or 30 for this setting.
HDR: This can be found under Settings > Video > HDR Enabled. If you have this switched “ON” then you can select “OFF”

Restart your modem and/or wifi router

Connection issues can occur with modems and/or wifi routers. To verify that your connection is stable, you may want to restart your modem and/or wifi router.

Typically, you’ll want to turn them off, wait for thirty seconds to a minute, and turn them back on again. Please be sure to follow your modem and router’s manufacturer instructions.

Internet Connection - wired vs wireless

If you are playing over wifi, you may want to see if a wired connection works better for you. Being plugged directly into the wifi router will provide a stronger, more stable connection.

If you are currently using a wired connection, you may want to restart your modem and/or wifi router. To do so, please follow the steps in the section above.

Internet Service Provider (ISP) Issues

If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is experiencing issues, this will directly impact your ability to play. Towerborne requires an internet connection. Please reach out to your ISP directly for any known issues they may be experiencing.

VPN - enable or disable

If you are using a VPN with your internet, you may want to try to disable the VPN to see if this fixes the issue.

If you typically use a VPN to play online, and you do not have yours enabled, turn it on to see if this fixes the issue.

Update your Drivers (PC or Steam)

If your computer’s drivers are out of date, this can prevent the game from functioning appropriately, or at all.

For steps on how to update drivers on your Windows PC, please follow the steps provided by Microsoft here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/update-drivers-manually-in-windows-ec62f46c-ff14-c91d-eead-d7126dc1f7b6

Close Other Programs (PC or Steam)

If you have resource-heavy applications running, this can impact Towerborne’s performance. Things like video streaming, file sharing, or other video and chat applications can have a negative impact on your gameplay.

Restart Your Computer (PC or Steam)

A complete restart of your computer may help to improve your game’s performance. To restart your computer:
Press the Start button on your computer
Press the Power button
Select Restart to begin the restart process

Validate Steam files (PC or Steam)

If you are missing textures or other content in game or experiencing crashing while playing a game, you can have Steam verify that the game's files are installed correctly on the computer.

  1. Launch Steam, this process may work better after you’ve restarted your computer (please check the section above for computer restart instructions)
  2. Right-click the game in your Steam Library
  3. Select Properties
  4. Next, click the Installed Files tab and click the Verify integrity of game files button
  5. From here, Steam will verify the integrity of the files. Please be patient during this process, it can take a few minutes.

Please visit Steam’s website for further information

Run Network Diagnostics (PC or Steam)

If you’ve gone through the above steps and are still experiencing trouble with your game crashing, you can use your computer’s Network Diagnostics tool to determine if there is a connection issue.

To run Network Diagnostics on your computer, go to Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network troubleshooter. From there, follow the instructions to determine if there’s an issue with your network.
